SURVEY OF ORDINARY CATHOLICS
OFFERS FEEDBACK FOR SYNOD
Pope Francis, concerned with the Church’s role in the lives of the People of God, has chosen to call a Synod of Bishops on the topic of Family Life and Evangelization. This Synod will gather bishops from around the world for a two-stage process: in 2014, an Extraordinary General Assembly will confer on the state of the question, collecting the experience and proposals of the bishop for better proclamation and living of the gospel in families; then, in 2015, an Ordinary General Assembly will seek to create guidelines to help organize the pastoral care of persons and families.
In a significant innovation, Pope Francis has called upon all the People of God — ordained and lay — to contribute their insights and reflections on the issues the bishops are to consider in Synod. In doing this, the Pope confirms the mission we are all given by the Second Vatican Council, “to spread the faith by word and deed” (Lumen Gentium, 11). Thus, we have a right and an obligation to share our experiences, our prayerful thoughts, and our discerned understanding with the bishops and the whole Church.
