Poets on Grief and Loss
Talking about loss is difficult for many of us who have trouble finding the right words to express how we feel. For many people, the holiday season is a difficult time because of losses they have endured during the year or perhaps because it reminds them once again of a loss that forever changed their lives. This phenomenom is sometimes referred to as having a "Blue Christmas." Regardless of the nature or time of loss, the following workshop can be valuable in helping to cope with it.

Poetry can help us regain balance in our lives after loss, whether it is loss of a spouse, a parent, child, friend, pet, a job, retirement security, or any other loss. Loss, and the grief that it brings, is a universal experience, a major event in our lives. This is recognized in the poetry we will read and examine in this two-hour workshop. Among the poets whose work we will consider are Joseph Stroud, Donald Hall, Jane Kenyon, Jack Gilbert, Mary Oliver, and others whose use of language can offer insight and bring about healing and transformation. There will also be time for the participants to write either prose or poetry as part of the process
